Andrea Birte Schueller

Profile

A business psychologist by education, She has spent the last 30+ years doing the same thing: supporting individuals, teams, and organisations to flourish – and still can’t imagine doing anything more exciting, or more rewarding.

Most of their time is dedicated to designing and delivering bespoke leadership development programmes that accelerate individual and organisational growth. They are targeted at managers and high potentials in international corporations, professional services firms, NGOs and academic institutions who are being primed for even broader leadership responsibilities.

Andrea started out as a consultant, being involved in large-scale change projects that ranged from the creation and implementation of a new approach to market to supporting organisations through restructures and mergers/acquisitions. In this role they realised how leaders need to be, to truly enable those around them: fuelling their self-efficacy and agency and ensuring they understand the business “why” for whatever is happening. Only then are they able to make conscious choices about committing their ability and potential in its support.

20 years after their German MSc in Psychology, specialising in occupational psychology, we graduated with an MSc in Coaching and Behavioural Change in the UK. The research for her first master’s thesis focused on the effectiveness of different set-ups in teaching people how to become more self-motivated. Unsurprisingly, even the most entertaining lecture led to little retention and next to no change in mind-set and behaviour. What made the difference was the degree of application to people’s own, real-life situations during the training. In their most recent master’s thesis focused on how to create psychological safety as a precursor to effective peer coaching in leadership development programmes, even though the participants were in competition for the top jobs. Andrea is an APECS (Association of Professional Executive Coaching and Supervision) accredited executive coach, which requires on-going professional development. They are currently studying to become an accredited Logo therapist (based on the teachings of neurologist Victor Frankl), so that they can support their clients even more effectively when they battle with the big issues of meaning and purpose.

Having grown up in Japan and Pakistan and having spent many happy years living and working in the UK, they delight in working internationally. Now based close to Munich in Germany, they deliver 90 % of their work in English to international groups. My corporate work currently focuses on Europe, Asia (particularly India and China) and the US. They use any free time to travel, indulge in my book hoarding habit and to support social enterprises or purpose-driven individuals as a mentor. Above all that they love being their amazing grown-up daughter’s mum.
